Whilst many visitors from overseas head off for the war graves on the European side of the Dardenelles, a small cemetary in the heart of Çanakkale lies hidden behind the walls of its secluded garden. You would drive by and never know it was there. Just a short distance from the Parion hotel is the Consular Cemetery which contains a number of graves from the period of 1860 – 1965. There are 38 graves from World War I and 1 from World War II. There are also 7 graves of other nationalities and a few non war graves within the grounds. Frank Calvert the British archaelogist credited with finding Troy is also buried here.
The cemetery is not open and is kept locked. You can obtain the key from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission office which is just a few minutes away. Contact the office by Tel: 0286 2171010. Address: İsmetpaşa, Nusrat Mayın Sk No:118, 17100 Çanakkale Merkez/Çanakkale.
